Crossing to Laos at Tay Trang
The Tay Trang international border gate, about 35 km west of Dien Bien Phu, is the crossing into northern Laos used by travellers heading for Muang Khua, Nong Khiaw and Luang Prabang. The Vietnamese side is straightforward; the Lao side is where plans fail, because the Lao eVisa is not valid here.

Entering Laos: the visa question
The official Lao eVisa portal lists nine ports where the eVisa is accepted: three airports, the Friendship Bridges I, II and IV with Thailand, and the Boten road and rail crossings and Vientiane's Khamsavath station. Sop Hun, opposite Tay Trang, is not among them. An eVisa will not get you into Laos here.
Sources disagree on whether the Lao post at Sop Hun issues visas on arrival. An independent guide updated in July 2025 says it does not, and advises getting a visa from the Lao embassy in Hanoi before travelling, which it says can usually be issued the same day if you apply in the morning. A visa agency page updated in September 2026 lists Sop Hun among crossings where a visa on arrival, costing about USD 20 to 42 depending on nationality, can be used. The Wikipedia table of Lao visa-on-arrival ports, compiled from official notices, does not list it.
Given the conflict, the safe plan is to hold a Lao visa before you reach the border, unless your nationality is exempt from visas for Laos. Check your nationality's status with the Lao embassy or your own foreign ministry. Your passport needs at least six months' validity from arrival and two blank pages.
Lao fees at the border are paid in kip; Vietnamese dong and US dollars are reported not to be accepted. There is no cash machine at the border, so change a small amount in Dien Bien Phu.

Entering Vietnam at Tay Trang
Coming from Laos into Vietnam, check first whether your nationality is exempt. British nationals, for example, can stay up to 45 days without a visa. Otherwise apply for a Vietnam e-visa: it costs USD 25 for a single entry or USD 50 for multiple entries, for stays of up to 90 days, and Tay Trang is on the official list of land gates where it is valid.
Name Tay Trang as your entry point on the application. The UK Foreign Office warns that e-visas restrict you to the entry and exit points you select, and immigration will not change them after you have arrived. A transport site notes that Tay Trang does not reliably issue visas on arrival, so do not rely on that.

The direct bus from Dien Bien Phu to Muang Khua runs once a day and may be cancelled if there are too few passengers, in which case it leaves the following day. Travellers report that seats are limited and allocated on a first-come basis. Treat every time in this table as an indication and confirm at the bus station the day before.
Without the bus, the alternative is to go to the border by taxi or motorbike taxi, cross on foot, and find onward transport on the Lao side, where there is no regular service and prices are negotiated. From Muang Khua, travellers continue by road or by boat on the Nam Ou river towards Nong Khiaw and then Luang Prabang.

Vehicles and motorbikes
Taking your own motorbike across is a separate matter. An independent guide reports that only motorbikes registered in Dien Bien province, with plates beginning 27, are generally allowed to exit into Laos at this crossing. Bikes rented or bought in Hanoi are usually not. Check before you ride to the border.

What can go wrong
- Arriving with only a Lao eVisa. It is not valid at Sop Hun.
- Assuming a Lao visa on arrival. Reports conflict; carry a visa from an embassy unless you are exempt.
- Holding a Vietnam e-visa that names a different entry gate when coming from Laos.
- Missing the single morning bus, or finding it cancelled for lack of passengers.
- Running out of kip on the Lao side, where there is no cash machine near the border.
- Arriving at the lunch break and losing time you needed for the road.
